Chew Review
Friday, September 11, 2015

At the Baltimore Comic Con, I ran into a new book for me called Chew. "Tony Chu is a detective with a secret. A weird secret. Tony Chu is Cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he's a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn't mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why. He's been brought on by the Special Crimes Division of the FDA, the most powerful law enforcement agency on the planet, to investigate their strangest, sickest, and most bizarre cases." Absolutely hilarious series with fantastic art. This. It's a great series. I love Tarantino films, and I am seriously considering framing issue #13 "Pullet Fiction" or it's variant "Reservoir Chogs". Tony Chu. Is. The man. I love that the entire universe rotates around food as an institution: FBI->FDA/CIA->USDA, all the characters are named after food and eating, a company resembling Monsanto, etc. The art is fantastic and has an incredible flow with the dialog. The series had me at "chicken speakeasy."

Saturday, November 16, 2013

Editor Melissa Howes-Vitek of FiND iT Frederick interviewed me for a profile in the magazine's Fall 2013 issue. I am featured as the "Faces of Frederick" personality! How cool is that? You can read all about my teaching experiences, books, and political activism with the Frederick County Teachers Association in the latest issue. Also, there are a bunch of pictures of two awesome former students of mine, Maria and Courtney, from the 2012-2013 school year! The magazine is totally free and can be found all over Frederick County. The profile starts on page 26. Check it out »

Each year r/RedditGifts solicits classroom teachers to create a Wish List through Amazon.com. The goal here is to put together a moderate selection of much-needed classroom materials so that Reddit users can donate supplies to schools across the world. Here is a brief excerpt from their site:

"Reddit gifts for the teachers is our annual program where teachers sign up who are in need of supplies for their classrooms, and nice people sign up to send them some supplies! There is no minimum or suggested value of these gifts, they can be as simple as some pencils or glue sticks - anything makes a difference and we need your help! Last year, participants from around the world sent almost $150,000 worth of supplies for teachers as the new school year started."
